For fine art prints, is it better to print from photoshop or a pdf file?
I always have printed from photoshop, but is it more color correct to save the file as a pdf and then print? I’m using an Epson 3800 printer on Enhanced Matte paper.
If you’re printing locally, there’s no need to save the file from a different format. PDF actually compresses the file. To achieve color accuracy, you should make sure
Image > Mode – is set to CMYK color. And consider calibrating your display.
The native mode for computer displays is RGB (Red, Green, Blue). The native mode for printers is CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (black). The difference has to do with how each piece of equipment actually creates the specified colors. The display creates the colors from light where the printer creates them with inks or pigments. Printers have algorithms that translate the RGB colors to CMYK.
During the editing process, you’ll always be looking at colors created with RGB but by setting the mode, the image will have the PS translation. If you still have trouble with variation between what you see on the display and what you get from the printer, go to Edit > Color Settings and experiment with the settings there. Also, if you’re going to have your work professionally printed, consider using one of the universal color space libraries. They’re specified in the color picker under Color Libraries.
