What ink pen do artists use to create monotone illustrations?

Try googling the illustrations of Harry Clarke and Arthur Rackham, those are the illustrations I mean, how do they make those large portions of pure black?

Forty years ago I learned how to use a Speedball lettering pen and Watercolor brush for creating ink drawings. Both those gentlemen worked in watercolor a lot (and in Clarke’s case, stained glass). For dark heavy areas, I’d go with a #2 or #4 watercolor brush. For lighter brush lines I’d go with a #00 brush. I would also use a rapidograph or speedball pen (if I wasn’t in a hurry and/or wanted those particular marks) for the thinner lines.
